Description
76 cm large and bulky bird. The Bittern has mottled brown body, daggerlike bill and short legs with very long toes. This very shy bird is more often heard then seen, when males proclaim their territories by a remarkable booming song, audible up to 5 km away. Restricted to large wet reedbeds.

Habitat
Marshes, bogs, backwaters, reeds
