| Description With its 36 cm the Little Bittern is the smallest heron in Europe. It has strong greenish legs, yellow dagger-like bill. The female has streaked brown black, while the male's back plumage is greenish gloss to black upperparts. Living among dense wetland cover, this tiny secretive heron is normally difficult to see. However, during its short, low flight, on rapidly beating wings, the big, oval, pale wing patches are a giwaway. The ocassional individual that perches high on a reed stem or on a branch overhanging the water reveals its subtle pattern, especially delicate in the male, including subtle stripes on the neck.
