| Description 78 cm. Slimmer and darker than the Grey Heron, with snake-like head and neck. Its neck is ginger coloured with dark stripes. The Purple Heron has dark back with paler buff plumes. It has rusty shoulder patch. In Hungary it breeds in the marshlands of the Great Plain and Transdanubia. Migrant.
