Description
115cm. Taller than torks and herons. It has long legs and long neck. It strides over the ground with an upright posture, the secondary feathers of its folded wings forming a bushy tail. The crane is characteristic by its red patch on crown, black face and throat. In Hungary on passage it is regular in spring (March-April) and locally abundant in autumn (September-November), primarily east of and along the River Tisza, only sporadically in Transdanubia. The Hortobágy has become one of the most important stop-over sites of the European population in autumn and also holds some oversumming and occasionally a few wintering birds.
