Bird of the month 02/2007
Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix)

46cm. The closely related Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) has recently been split as a separate species. The Hooded Crow has black head, bill, throat, wings, tail, legs and thigh feathers. Other parts of its body are ash-grey. This distinguishes it from the Carrion Crow, which is purely black with blue gloss. The male and female Hooded Crows are similar, however the male is somewhat larger. The Hooded Crow’s calls are harsh 'kra-kra-kra', which may have given rise to the imitative name 'crow'.

Habitat

Very common in Hungary, can be found almost everywhere: in the centre of cities, arable farmlands, pastures, upland hills, moors, woodlands .
