Bird of the month 02/2005 Bullfinch (pyrrhula pyrrhula) 16 cm. A very distinctive and easy to identify bird. Male has black cap, grey upperpart and red underpart. Female has brownish upper- and underpart. Juvenile is similar to female, but lacks dark cap and has a dingy wingbar. Bullfinch is widespread in Europe, mostly in the northern part. It breeds mostly in conifer or mixed forests. In autumn and winter it often visits gardens and parks to feed on berries and seeds. In Hungary it is a rare breeder and a regular winter visitor and appears usually in small flocks.
