Bird of the month 05/2005
Corn Bunting (Miliaria calandra)

18 cm, stocky, pale bunting. It has streaked, pale brown back and streaked chest. Its bill is heavy and yellowish, and there are dark stripes on its crown. The Corn Bunting lives in the Western Palearctic. In Hungary it can be found mainly on open countries and on hilly lands, where it prefers the edge-plants of extensive agricultural areas. Small lots, mosaic-like cultivated fields are especially favourable. Typically has an elevated song-post, from where breeding area is indicated. Resident in Hungary, at the moment population is steady, though intensive use of chemicals, spreading of huge mono-cultural areas, stopping of grasses can mean dangering factors.

Habitat

Open agricultural areas, with scattered trees and bushes. Resident in Hungary.
