Bird of the month 11/2005 Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) 34cm. Small bird of prey with short neck, long wings and long tail. Males have bluish-grey head, rump and tail, with a black stripe at the end of the tail. They have reddish-brown back and buff underparts with dark spots. Females have rufous head, back and tail, and a more spotted back than males. Juveniles resemble females, but more boldly streaked below. Upon hunting they frequently hover. Their call is a strong "kee, kee, kee", that is most usually heard near to their nests.
