Bird of the month 02/2006
Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cachinnans)

55 cm. This gull is close relation of the Herring Gull, so it is very similar to this. Yellow-legged in adult plumage has greyish back, white tail, underbody and head, and yellow, strong bill with red gonys. Eyes pale. Primaries are black with white mirrors. Legs are yellow or yellowish. Juveniles are more brownish on their head and back, and underbody also brownish. Legs pinkish. Its nasality call is more similar to the Lesser Black-backed Gull’s call than to the Herring’s.

Habitat

Rare breeder in Hungary, mainly in Eastern-Hungary, but on migration it’s very common. From May-June immatures, later adults appear in the country on rivers, lakes, fishponds and steppes. Few of them spend the winter here.
