Bird of the month 03/2006 Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) 35-39 cm. The most common gull in Hungary. In adult summer plumage its head is darkbrown, bill is dark reddish and narrow, back is grey, tail white, legs are medium-long and red, and its primaries are black and white. In winter its head gets white with only two dark-spots: above the eyes and ont he earcoverts, and the bill and legs get paler. Juvenile birds have much paler legs and bills, brownish head and back, and well-marked black tail-bar. Its call is a „krrííé” or a short „kek”. In colonies the birds are very noisy.
