Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)

77-94 cm. A rather big, mainly black bird. Bill is strong, crooked. Neck is long, thick. Head, neck, wings, underbody and legs are black. In summer plumage adult birds have a white spot above their legs. All the year a smaller, pale patch is around the bill-base. Juvenile bird’s underbody is whitish. It eats many fishes on fishponds, gravelpits and sea. Call is deep guttural.

Habitat

Rather common in Hungary, it breeds along rivers, fishponds. It builds its nest on trees or in reedbeds. Many of them migrate, but the others stay in the country all the year.
