Bird of the month 06/2006
Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major)

24 cm. Medium-sized woodpecker. The commonest woodpecker of Europe is mainly black and white. It has two big, white scapular patches. Very similar to the Syrian Woodpecker (D. syriacus), but Great Spotted’s undertail-coverts are more reddish, outer tailfeathers have more white, and white face is separated by a black line. Males have less red on their head, than the Syrians. Females have black nape. Its call is more sharp, short „tschick”, than Syrian’s one.

Habitat

Very common in Hungary, it can be found also in towns and forests, downlands and in hills. Resident.
