Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)

18cm. Large, stocky finch, with strong conical bill. The Hawfinch has large head, thick neck, quite short pink legs and short squared tail. It has pinkish-brown underside with black throat and brown upperside. The Hawfinch’s wings are blackish and in flight the Hawfinch shows black wings with wide, white patches and short tail with white edges. Males have slightly brightly colours than females. Juveniles are brown above and yellow underneath, with speckled breasts. With their powerful beak, they are able to open fruit stones.

Habitat

The Hawfinch inhabits mature deciduous woods and mixed woodland, some large parks an cemeteries. The Hawfinch is resident in Hungary, but part of the population migrates.
