Bird of the month 05/2007
Long-eared Owl (Asio otus)

31-37 cm. Medium-sized owl, with brownish plumage, and orange eyes. Often looks rather long and thin with head feathers known as "ear-tufts" (which are not ears) that may be raised and lowered. Their cat-like faces can change from round to narrow, when the birds are streched up and roosting. In winter they gather mainly on ever-green trees (pine, thuja).

Habitat

Rather common breeder in woods, parks, and alleys. It breeds even in the capital. In winter they gather in smaller-larger groups. Sometimes you can count more than 200 birds together!
