Bird of the month 09/2007
Western Reef Heron (Egretta gularis)

55-68 cm. Slightly larger than Little Egret. It has two distinct morphs: the white one is very similar to the Little Egret, but bill is longer and little bit curved, and there is more yellow on its legs. The dark morph is greyish-blue, with white throat.

Habitat

Very rare vagrant in Hungary with only one accepted record. Breeds in mangroves.
