Borsodi Mezőség, Tokaj, Zempléni Mountains

Day 1 - Borsodi-Mezőség, Tokaj, Zempléni Mountains
IBA visited: 37, 39, 42
Key species: Imperial Eagle, Saker, Eagle Owl, Rock Bunting

After an hour drive from Budapest we will reach the so-called "small Hortobágy", in the Borsod-fields. This landscape of Hungary is almost completely flat and regarding the richness of its natural resources can be compared with the nearby Great Hungarian Plain, Hortobágy. During the trip we will visit several typical habitats in the area, where we can observe
  • Imperial Eagle;
  • Saker
and many other species of the puszta several times.

In this season most of the Hungarian breeding species can still be found, but also the migrating and wintering species are beginning to appear. The atmosphere and the value of this land is unforgettable.

We continue on our way toward a lovely little town, Tokaj. This town, with its volcanic cone (called Kopasz-hegy, "Bare Hill") rising close-by, is a real oasis of the region. The town is famous for its wine-growing and especially its white wine, the aszú.

As a result of the location and conditions of the Kopasz-hegy, it provides many interesting and unusual opportunities for the birders. The landscape with the wonderful small valleys, the meeting point and curves of Tisza and Bodrog rivers, the mood of the city and its many cultural sights ensures astounding scenery. All these conditions (favourable vegetation, carefuly cultivated vineyards, wooden and bare slopes, empty stonepits, etc.) provide an ideal environment also for birding. In order to increase the experience of the day, we can find a fascinating birdspecies the
  • Wallcreeper
in the disused mines of the mountain. If we are lucky, we can see here the greatest owl species of Europe: the
  • Eagle Owl.
The surroundings of Tokaj hide always many interesting things. Lunch will include wine-tasting, in Tokaj. We will start on our way in the late afternoon towards the "harbinger" of the Carpathians, the Zemplén-hills.

Overnight will be spent in a small village of Zemplén, Hejce.

Day 2 - Borsodi-Mezőség, Tokaj, Zempléni Mountains
IBA visited: 42
Key species: Imperial Eagle, Ural Owl, White-backed Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker

Zemplén Mountains are the most romantic hills of Hungary. Here already had been seen wolf and lynx. On this day, with the help of one of the most experienced Hungarian raptor-experts, we can observe the
  • Ural Owl
that pursues a secluded way of life.

During the day we can see bird species like
  • Imperial Eagle;
  • Golden Eagle; and
  • White-backed Woodpecker.
If we are lucky, we might find almost all the woodpecker species. The land and its historical past is captivating and fantastic!
