Lake Fertő and Hanság


Day 1 - Lake Fertő and Hanság

Key species: all herons, Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous Duck, Great Bustard, Corncrake, Mediterranean Gull, Moustached Warbler, Savi's Grasshopper and River Warblers, Lesser Grey Shrike

After a two hour drive from Budapest we will reach the Eastern shoreline of Lake Fertő, the biggest European steppe lake, that offers a fascinating view on the waterfowl. Herons, ˇ
  • Greylag Geese
ducks, shorebirds, gulls can be seen in great numbers and the variety of raptor species even increases the spectacle.

In the reedbeds the songs of ˇ
  • Moustached Warblers;
  • Bluethroat; and ˇ
  • Savi's Warblers
can be heard.

Regularly occurs here in autumn and in winter
  • Greater Spotted Eagle
and many other rarities have been found, such asˇ
  • Greater Sand Plover;
  • Pacific Golden Plover; and ˇ
  • Paddyfield Warbler.
We continue our way to a mysterious area called Hanság. This beautiful region, divided into wet meadows, alder woods and open waterareas, ensures an excellent habitat for several raptor species, song- and water birds. The top species of the day will be the
  • Great Bustard
on a specially handled, protected area. If we are lucky, beside many other species we can see here
  • Lesser Grey Shrike and
  • Red Kite.
